Moody & funky new wave by members of The Names & Jo Lemaire+Flouze (BE)

This is the the only release by an ephemeral Brussels band formed by Michel Sordinia and Daniel François. Michel was the lead singer with The Names, a band whose debut album was produced by Martin Hannett, and who were associated with Factory Benelux and Les Disques du Crépuscule. Daniel (who sadly passed away a few years later) was the lead guitarist with Jo Lemaire+Flouze, one of the most popular new wave/pop bands in Belgium at the time. By Chance also comprised Flouze bassist Ferdinand Philippot, drummer Philippe Mobers and sax player Claude Bofane. This moody double A-side single included an original composition, and a cover of a song by The Doors. It was recorded in Brussels at ICP, and mixed at London’s Berry Street Studio (favoured at the time by the likes of Adrian Sherwood, The Sugarcubes, Scritti Politti, and Crammed Discs bands such as The Honeymoon Killers and Minimal Compact). Marc Hollander (the fledgling label’s boss) lent a hand by overdubbing some keyboards.

By Chance played a string of shows in Belgium, then went on to recruit a female vocalist, wrote new material for an album, but disbanded before the project was completed. As for Michel’s band The Names, they reformed in 2007 and released five new albums since then.
