People In Control - When It’s War (1980)

The ephemeral indie-dub collective linked to This Heat, Family Fodder & ON-U Sound (UK)

The first single ever released by Crammed was this magical 3-track 7” by People In Control, a loose London collective centered around bassist & producer Martin Harrison (aka Martin Frederix, who also worked with Family Fodder and Adrian Sherwood, and later became Aswad’s sound engineer). The record features vocalists Judy Jude and Ian Hill (Family Fodder), drummer Rick Wilson (The Work), Buma Musawa and Michel (two percussionists from Cameroon), and guitarist Charles Bullen, from influential band This Heat (he would, much later, record a great album for Crammed subsidiary Language, under the Circadian Rhythms moniker).

The single was mixed by Martin Frederix in a kitchen in Brussels (in Véronique Vincent & Marc Hollander’s former, tiny house, which was soon to become Crammed Discs’ first headquarters). While the sublime song on the A-side -with its ethereal vocals, ‘tribal’ percussion & dub effects- was reissued on a couple of compilations, the B-side (containing another great song, Failing to Achieve, with vocals by Ian Hill & sterling guitar work by Charles Bullen, as well as the Pale Fail dub) has been unavailable for decades. The cover was designed by Bernard Beauduin, who created the original Crammed logo on that occasion. People In Control were meant to record a full-length LP for Crammed, but this never happened.
